Cognitive Offloading
Cognitive offloading is the use of external actions or tools to reduce the mental work a task requires.
Established ConceptWhat does it mean in everyday language?
Writing a reminder, arranging objects, or using a calculator changes how much you need to hold in mind or work out internally.
An example
Hypothetical example: a researcher saves a searchable transcript so they can look up exact wording instead of trying to remember every sentence.
A more precise definition
Cognitive offloading involves actions that alter the information-processing demands of a task. External representations, physical arrangements, and digital tools can support remembering, calculating, or problem solving.
Key features
- Redistributes work between a person and their environment
- Includes simple physical actions as well as digital tools
- Can be assessed through task performance and later recall
Where the definition stops
It is not inherently a loss of intelligence, memory, or independence. Using a tool successfully and learning the material without it are different outcomes.
How it relates to synthetic imprinting
An AI assistant may change how someone stores and retrieves information. Researchers should distinguish improved task completion from what is later remembered without assistance.
Research context
Risko and Gilbert review how people use external supports and decide when to offload. Their framework does not imply that every form of offloading has the same benefits or costs.
