Digital watermarking embeds a signal in content to help identify its origin, ownership, or processing history.

A watermark can be a visible mark or a signal detected by software. Some systems use such signals to help recognize generated content.
An example
Hypothetical example: an image generator embeds a signal that a compatible detector can recognize after the image has been downloaded.
A more precise definition
Digital watermarking modifies content to encode information that can later be detected or extracted. Methods differ by medium, visibility, robustness to editing, and the information needed for detection.

Where the definition stops
Watermarking is not a universal AI detector or a guarantee of authenticity. An undetected mark does not prove human authorship, and a detected mark does not establish that every claim about the content is true.
How it relates to synthetic imprinting
A watermark may provide a provenance cue. Its technical detection and its influence on a person's interpretation are separate questions.

NIST's synthetic-content report compares watermarking with other transparency methods. It discusses tradeoffs including detectability, false results, and whether signals survive editing or deliberate removal.
