Generative AI
Generative AI is artificial intelligence that produces content such as text, images, audio, video, or code using patterns learned from data.

A generative system creates an output in response to input, such as a request for an explanation or an image. The result may be useful, inaccurate, fictional, or a mixture.
An example
Hypothetical example: a teacher asks a model to create a fictional dialogue for a language exercise, then reviews and adapts it for the class.
A more precise definition
Generative artificial intelligence comprises models and systems designed to generate content based on learned statistical relationships. Systems differ in their training, inputs, outputs, and access to external information or tools.

Where the definition stops
Generation does not establish truth, originality, understanding, or permission to reuse an output. Not all AI systems are generative, and not all synthetic media is made with AI.

Generative AI is one source of the artificial experiences considered by the proposed framework. Its presence alone says nothing about the duration or direction of an effect.
Research context
NIST defines generative AI in terms of content production. Psychological claims about its use require studies of people and outcomes in addition to technical descriptions of the model.
