Social Presence
Social presence is the sense that another social actor is present and available for interaction through a medium.

A voice, message, or avatar can make an interaction feel as though someone is there with you, even when you are physically alone.

Hypothetical example: a responsive virtual guide turns toward a visitor and answers a question, making the exchange feel socially immediate.
A more precise definition
Social presence concerns the perceived availability and involvement of another social actor in a mediated setting. Different theories emphasize co-presence, mutual attention, understanding, or behavioral engagement.

Where the definition stops
It does not prove that an AI system is conscious, has feelings, or reciprocates a relationship. It is also different from attributing human traits to a system or forming an enduring parasocial bond.

Social presence may be one feature of a synthetic interaction to measure. A momentary sense of company is different from a lasting change in expectations or attachment.
