Reality Monitoring
Reality monitoring is the process of judging whether a memory came from an external experience or an internally generated thought.

You may remember a scene and ask whether you actually saw it or only imagined it. Reality monitoring is the set of judgments involved in making that distinction.
An example
Hypothetical example: after planning a room redesign, someone tries to distinguish a layout they imagined from a layout they actually saw on a screen.
A more precise definition
Reality monitoring concerns attributing remembered information to perceptual experience or internal activities such as imagination and reasoning. It is a particular form of source monitoring.

Where the definition stops
It is not a direct test of whether an image depicts a real event. Seeing an AI-generated image is an external perceptual experience, even when the scene shown never happened.

This distinction prevents a common confusion: remembering exposure to a generated scene is different from believing the depicted event occurred.
Research context
Johnson and Raye developed a model of how people discriminate between memories of thoughts and perceptions. Identifying whether viewed media was authentic requires additional judgments about its source.
